"Why does everyone think that Gallien (the man who gave Chris a ride) in Into the Wild, opted to not call the police after Chris left his car? Gallien said, "I figured he'd be OK," but why would anyone think this considering where Chris was going with little to no supplies? State your opinion."
REMEMBER THIS PROMPT IS ONLY FOR THOSE OF YOU IN SECTION 25
Here's my response -
I think there could really be several reasons for this. Maybe Gallien just wanted to give Chris the benefit of the doubt - that maybe he knew what he was doing, something. But it's like this thing I always here - that women should yell "Fire" and not "Help" if being attacked because people are more likely to come. What does that suggest? That people don't care? I don't think so. I just think it means that we're scared. We're unwilling to put ourselves on the line for somebody we barely know, or don't know at all.
Gallien could have saved Chris if he had called - but saved him for how long? And how was that Gallien's responsibility? I could see if Chris was on fire and needed help - certainly Gallien should help. But this is a consenting adult, going out into the wild with the gear he had - how was Gallien to know that Chris didn't know everything he seemed to know? There are all these variables and people say that it takes a village to raise a child but where does INDIVIDUAL responsibility come into play? I don't have answers to these questions, but this is what I think of when I think of why he didn't call. I think, of course he didn't call. That's not the kind of world we live in. That's exactly what Chris was running away from.
