Here lies group B's prompt for this week -
"After initially writing the essay on your opinion of Christopher McCandless, has further reading in the book Into the Wild changed your opinion of McCandless or set or more so set it in stone?"
Here is my response -
Obviously, I didn't write this essay. But I can say that my opinion of McCandless did change as I read and re-read the book. I think my opinion of McCandless has even changed as I have aged. As a teenager, I thought he was an idiot. I still think he's an idiot, but for different reasons. He was a romantic. He was an idealist. And I think, in this country, in this world even, being a romantic and an idealist can be dangerous. I think that this country in particular isn't hospitible to those personas. And McCandless knew that - that's why (I think) he left society behind in search of the raw wilderness. What he didn't realize was that the raw wilderness doesn't care. Or maybe he did realize that but didn't fully internalize it...? I don't know. I do know that where at once I used to hate McCandless, now I just feel sorry for him. More importantly, I feel sorry for the family who never got to say goodbye. And for that, I am and will always be angry at him.
THIS PROMPT IS FOR SECTION 35 ONLY, WHICH MEETS FROM 10:35-11:50
